A Life of Prayer is a Creative Life

The Belonging House Online House of Prayer

Lord, teach us to pray.

This was the plea of the first disciples of Jesus, and it is the cry of millions today.

Prayer is developing a relationship with God through listening and talking. It is a conversation. That conversation must always begin with the Bible. At the top of this page you can navigate the daily Bible readings and services of prayer throughout the day. I encourage you to add these to your daily routine.

Prayer is practicing the Presence of God. This is very simple. We make a point to remind ourselves that Christ is in us, and that His indwelling presence can live in and through us. Throughout the day I place my hand over my heart, and I use phrases from John 15. “Jesus I am in you, and you are in me.” “I live in you and you live in me.” “If I am in you, then I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.”

Prayer forms and transforms us. One of the core ideas of the New Testament is the Greek word “metanoia.” It means to be transformed in your thinking. You cannot have an encounter with God and not be changed.

Prayer changes the way we speak and act. We encourage all of our Belonging House family to speak and recite Scripture, and to regularly transform their thinking and speaking through the use of Biblical declarations. We encourage our prayer team to pray from a place of thanksgiving, praise, and abundance rather than praying and naming problems that we want God to solve. We highly recommend Igniting Hope Ministries and their declarations.

Prayer is fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Although written forms are helpful, they can become dry religious activities without the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:26 says: “Likewise the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.” In our relationship with God it is important to learn to partner with the Holy Spirit and be filled with the Holy Spirit. If you have never been filled with the Holy Spirit, please watch this video with Nicky Gumbel.

Prayer is about developing a rhythm in life.

  • I recommend finding time and space where you will be undisturbed and quiet.

  • Lay aside all ideas about performance or spending a predetermined amount of time.

  • Begin with thanksgiving, and praise. Morning Prayer will begin with a psalm of praise.

  • I recommend reading the Daily Readings, and take time to ask God to highlight what He is saying today.

  • Keep a notebook to write down thoughts related to the scripture and also things God might be saying to you each day. By keeping a notebook you will begin to discern what is the voice of God, the voice of your own soul, and the voice of the demonic. The only way to learn this is practice.

  • I take time practicing silence, and have chosen to limit my media consumption so that I can stay tuned to the Word of God, and respond in prayer. In prayer, God calls and we respond.

Prayer happens in community. We really do need each other. Belonging House encourages artists and creative people to enter into relationship with others as a form of strength and support. We gather monthly as a team to pray, and we encourage artists to form Fire Teams. Prayer is also a partnering with the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us. We are all in this together.

Prayer is more a dance than a discipline. Prayer is learning to follow the lead of the Father and respond accordingly. It is about letting God change you, and bring a transformation of the mind. It is about getting the perspective of the Kingdom of Heaven and not human perspective.

I hope this website is a help to you as you develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

He Never Fails,

Christ John Otto

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.  St. Paul, Philippians 4:6-8, NLT

The Little Prayer Book

Christ John Otto has compiled the actual prayers he uses regularly into a pdf booklet. You can access it here to download and print for your own use. All contents are either public domain or written by our ministry.

The Prayer of Self Dedication

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated unto you; and then use us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Belonging House Prayer

O Author of Beauty, who first revealed yourself as Creator, and filled Bezalel with the Holy Spirit. Raise up an Army of Artists who will build Jesus a Throne in the earth, and make a way for the Coming of the Lord.

Fill us, renew us, and make us bearers of your glory. May your kingdom be established, and your throne be extended by the good work of our hands, and the expressions of our creativity. Through Jesus Christ, the Icon of the Invisible God, Amen.

A Prayer for Revival

O Holy Spirit, come like a mighty rushing wind and awaken us out of our complacency, our apathy, and our indifference.

Disturb us, for we are too content to let people go on not knowing you. Penetrate the closed gates of our hearts and make us live again.

O Holy Spirit, create among us a mighty Christian revolution and cast the fear of the unknown out of our lives.

Micheal Hollings and Etta Gullick from the Catholic Prayer Book, adapted.

Fire Teams

In the British Army, the smallest unit of personnel is called a Fire Team. This is a unit of 3-5 soldiers.

God has called us to raise up an army of artists, and over time this army as been described again and again as small interconnected fires.

Here is a simple model for you to start your own Fire Team. All you need is one other person who is creative and who desires to grow deeper in their relationship with God. Learn to listen to God together, and learn to listen to each other.

We trust you to start and maintain your group, and we trust the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you as you follow this model. It would be encouraging to let us know if you are running a group. You can access the model here to download and print.

Then the Lord showed me artisans from the four corners of the earth. And I asked, what are these artisans coming to do? And the Lord said, these horns are the powerful nations that scattered Judah, so no one could raise his head. But these artisans have come to terrify them and to strike down the forces that rise up against God’s people. Zechariah 1:21 paraphrased

The Belonging House Commitment

I will believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and love other people.

I will surrender myself to the Holy Spirit, and depend on his supernatural help.

I will attend to the Breaking of the Bread and Prayer.

I will stay in relationship with others who are passionate about Jesus.

I will saturate myself in all of the Bible and let it’s story become my story.

I will listen to the Lord, and do what He tells me.

I will pursue excellence in my craft, and continually choose to grow and learn.

I will go low, become a servant, and trust that God will raise me up.

I will become more aware of Christ in me, the hope of glory.

I will embrace my vocation as an artist, artisan or creative professional, no matter my medium, knowing that God wants to transform the kingdoms of this world into the Kingdom of our Lord through the arts and creativity.

I will live a life of expectation knowing Christ will come again.

Sign up for the Friday Email

Each Friday we send out an email to our Belonging House family. In 13 years we haven’t missed a week. Each email promises to inspire, teach, and tell the story of what God is doing through Belonging House. We do not use the emails to raise money or sell books.
